Dr. Rob Cushman, chief executive officer of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, said the project is the way of the future. "People ask me all the time, 'what are we going to do with our health care system? We need more money, more doctors and nurses and more MRI machines'," he said at the launch.  "The fact of the matter is we can't have more. We can't afford it. The real answer is we have to do better. We have to think smarter ... keep score and focus, and this is a great new initiative in that respect."

Community organizations came together at a Kirkwood Ave. seniors building yesterday to launch Aging in Place. The 1,040 residents of the five buildings together make 1,700 emergency room trips a year, said Dr. Robert Cushman, CEO of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network.  The pilot program will link seniors to services including foot clinics and nursing care, and provides a van to get them to appointments or outings.

The program, called Aging in Place, aims to keep these seniors happy in their homes rather than miserable in hospitals. Seniors make about 1,700 emergency room visits a year. The appearances by case workers, doing things such as sorting out medicine and ensuring that proper hygiene and diet are maintained, should slow the process of going to longterm care homes or hospitals.
